Text: "Julie Lawson, Special Learning Needs Coordinator, Horizon Christian School, Balaklava."] JULIE LAWSON: We now time our documentation of all our adjustments for our students to coincide with report writing for the major data collection so that the teachers, the last thing they need is for me to say, "Now can you do this on top of what you're already doing?" We do it first term with interviews, in the middle of the year for the data collection, third term with interviews, and then have another look at the end of the year, to add or change whatever's already on there. [A young teacher works with three small children. Julie Lawson is interviewed.] JULIE LAWSON: Towards the end of term one, we have a staff meeting, and we talk through the Disability Discrimination Act, the data collection, how that's going to happen, the different levels, what that means, and so teachers know in their head what they're looking for quite early on. The teacher initially makes that judgement. They are highly skilled. They know their students well. They have documentation of what the level was last year, so that we know if there's a big discrepancy, we've really got to look closely at that. Then it comes across my desk, and I have [00:08:00] a look and have another moderation of it, and just compare it to the knowledge that I've got. Then it goes back to the classroom teacher for another look at. We will also use the matrix from the NCCD website, and have a look on there, and go through. [Small students in green, grey and yellow uniforms work alone in class.] JULIE LAWSON: We build common understanding by talking about the levels in staff meetings. When we discuss students, we discuss which level they're on, so which sort of adjustments they're having. When we do data collection, there is a lot of talking that goes on between people. Students that receive adjustments for other reasons, if there is a student that is counted on the NCCD or the teachers would like to be, when they record their adjustments, and it says absenteeism or for another reason, then we'll go and have a conversation, have a look at the imputed disability information off the website and then work out, well, do they meet the criteria or not? [The young teacher and an older woman sit in front of a bookcase. The older woman is interviewed. Text: Kathy Niejalke, Teacher, Horizon Christian School, Balaklava." A teacher works with two small students. They write on small whiteboards.] KATHY NIEJALKE: We reach a common understanding by discussing it together in a group. We have a staff meeting allocated each term to moderating and we'll spend that time with colleagues in a similar year level and we'll share work samples and help come to a common understanding that we're all on the same level. I think it's really important to be able to communicate with other colleagues, to gain that correct understanding. [A teacher works with teenage students using books and computers. Julie Lawson is interviewed.] JULIE LAWSON: In the secondary, because we have multiple teachers, they all have an input, and so they may not necessarily in person get together because we have a lot of students on our data collection, so we either do it through Google Docs or through an email. You know, let's work out which level this student is on. Then once I've had a final look at it, it goes to our sub-school leaders, and they go through it and agree with the levels, and then it goes to our principal, and he looks at it and he signs off on it.
