[bright upbeat music] - As-salamu 'alaykum and welcome to Al-Taqwa college. My name is Miriam Haroun and I'm the head of Foundation to Grade two. Our school is located in the western suburbs of Melbourne with over 2200 students, ranging from classes Foundation to Year 12. [bright music] When talking about the NCCD,it is important to have already established that relationship with parents. One of our greatest challenges at our school is the parents emotional impact when you talk about their children. In my experience, I've noticed that there's a stigma attached to the word disability. At Al-Taqwa in order to de-stigmatize that negative view, we have a lot of activities where we are doing it through the kids, we're educating the students. Our goal here is for the kids to go home and to, during dinner, you know, have a dialogue about it. Tell the parent, we've learned this, this and open up all the doors towards more inclusivity. - Do you have five circles? - [Naiza] The NCCD also targets students need's in a very, very respectful way,and gives students what they need by allowing teachers to constantly think about strategies, think of how they could make, how they could support the students in the classroom. I'd like to reiterate and ensure parents that the data collected is in no way, in no way identifies your child. There are no extra tests and there's no pressure on your child. So when engaging with families, we prefer face to face contact. We have an open door policy, especially in regards to the NCCD. We need to be mindful of how the parent feels we need to be mindful of how we address it with the parents. We also need to put ourselves in the parents shoesand see it from their perspective. It is these little things which, which have a powerful impact on the parents experience at our school. [bright music]
