Planning
In the Planning phase, typically in Term 1, prepare for the NCCD by building understanding of the NCCD and its underpinning legislation. Discuss processes, review support materials and communicate with parents, guardians, carers and students.
Key activities
The school principal is responsible for facilitating the NCCD process and ensuring that all staff are aware of the NCCD process and the school's obligations.
These key activities may be undertaken by the principal or school team. The Planning phase activities are recommended for the NCCD, but are not mandatory.
-
Extend or build an understanding of the NCCD
-
Consolidate understanding of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005
-
Discuss and establish processes including moderation processes
-
Communicate with students, parents, guardians and carers
-
Review the national support materials
-
Start identifying evidence of adjustments
-
Seek assistance as needed
Whole-school approach
By taking a whole-school approach to the NCCD, schools can ensure that the whole school understands the NCCD process and the school's obligations under the legislation.
Involving the whole school will require the development of a timeline and strategic planning. It is recommended that schools taking a whole-school approach commence planning very early in the school year to set specific meeting dates for various groups as soon as possible.
